International recognition for Tayside Clinical Trials Unit

Tayside Clinical Trials Unit (TCTU) - a joint initiative between the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside - has been recognised for its expertise in trial design and delivery.
An International Review Committee of experts led the 2017 UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) Registration Process, designed to signpost high-quality expertise to carry out clinical trials in the UK.
TCTU was amongst 46 units across the UK, receiving successful registration. To be eligible to apply, Units must demonstrate they are capable of centrally coordinating multi-centre clinical trials and other well-designed studies, taking overall responsibility for the design, conduct, data management, publicity and analysis of a trial in line with appropriate standards and regulations.
Sir Kent Woods, Emeritus Professor at the University of Leicester and Chair of the International Review Committee said: “The International Registration Review Committee is delighted to see the clear impact of this programme on the quality of conduct of clinical trials research in the UK.”
The Tayside Clinical Trials Unit (TCTU) was established in October 2008 as a collaboration of the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside to deliver excellence in the design, conduct and governance of clinical trials.
Integration as part of the Tayside Medical Science Centre (TASC), allows full clinical trial support for NHS Tayside and University of Dundee clinical researchers; bringing together the expertise needed to undertake a clinical trial, including clinicians, statisticians, software developers and trial managers. Working across a broad spectrum of indications not limited to drug trials, TCTU is also active in dental projects, paediatric studies and healthy lifestyle interventions. In addition to supporting local trial teams, TCTU works with leading clinical investigators across the UK and Europe.
Fiona Hogarth, Co-Director of the facility commented: “TCTU was awarded full registration back in 2012 and we are delighted an international team of experts has again awarded full registration demonstrating our continued commitment to high-quality research and the implementation of robust processes and procedures. Full registration also secures our ability to collaborate on applications to external funding bodies further enhancing research opportunities across Tayside and beyond.”
Clinical trials have been a key part of establishing Tayside as a major centre of world-class medical research. They bring benefits to patients by allowing researchers to develop better treatments and improve prevention of major diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and others.
